Nettle Creek C.C., a public golf facility in Grundy County (just outside Morris), provided an opportunity in mid-July, 2002, for the Centerstage Golf staff to play a relaxing round on a well-maintained track. A bit short for a championship layout (the front plays at just 3075 yards from the tips), there are still plenty of challenging holes, especially for mid- to high-handicappers. The 11th hole, at 400 yards from the tips, demands two well-placed shots for a birdie chance: avoid the lake on the left off the tee; and then play a middle to long iron to a severely sloping green protected front and right by more water. With the exception of #18, the Par 3's are a handful. The 7th and 8th, two healthy Par 4's, play at 394 and 419 yards repectively. Though not necessarily reachable for the average player, the Par 5's do offer good chances for birdies. The greens are large, fairly quick and more subtle than severe. An inexpensive yardage card is available, and a practice range now under construction will be ready for 2003. The ranch-style clubhouse with wrap-around porch offers a comfortable spot to relax with sandwiches and beverages while discussing how your score could have been better, if only....
